ADNOC and Siemens Energy collaborate to develop blockchain-based low-CO2 energy certificates | Whuff News

  • The Pilot forms part of a broader creative collaboration between the two companies to address the energy transition
  • The agreement involves co-creating “Power-to-X” technology to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Abu Dhabi – The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Siemens Energy AG today announced plans to implement blockchain technology to ensure the carbon intensity of their product range.

Using smart sensor data collected throughout ADNOC’s operational chain – from the oil well to the customer – the pilot will show how much CO2 has been used to make products such as Murban crude, ammonia, and jet fuel. This information will be automatically recorded in the block ledger.

Such transparency would allow independent regulators to verify the carbon intensity of products. It will give consumers more confidence and transparency over the carbon footprint of their purchases.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, Executive Director, People, Technology and Support Management Division at ADNOC, said: “People usually associate blockchain technology with crypto currencies, but the use of distributed ledgers has a significant impact on the energy industry. This driver -mali promises to shine a digital light on our production processes. It will show the world why the energy provided by ADNOC is central to the low carbon industry in the oil and gas industry.”

The initiative for a low carbon energy certificate is part of a broader memorandum of understanding between ADNOC and Siemens Energy. Under this agreement, experts from both companies will collaborate to develop technologies to accelerate decarbonization and the transition to clean energy. They will work together at ADNOC’s state-of-the-art innovation center in Abu Dhabi. Other areas under joint development include electrification and “Power-to-X” technology to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives, including CO2-based products.

Dr. Fahad Al Yafei, Chief Technology Officer, Siemens Energy Middle East, said: “Using our unique knowledge and expertise in sustainability certifications, Siemens Energy will work with ADNOC to develop solutions to benefit the energy industry. Investment in innovation and technology collaboration are critical tools for reducing emissions and meeting Net Zero targets.”

Under the agreement, signed at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), the collaboration between ADNOC and the Siemens Energy Innovation Center will begin at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022. The agreement was signed by Sophie Hildebrand, Chief Technology Officer. , ADNOC and Dr Al Yafei.

The partnership is the latest in a series of new collaborations between ADNOC and leading technology pioneers from around the world.

The Siemens Energy Middle East Innovation Center is one of four global innovation hubs leveraging the company’s expertise in developing sustainable, reliable and affordable clean energy technologies.
