Canon India has been running various programs in rural India for over nine years, positively impacting 80,000 people across the country under its ‘Embrace a Village’ initiative.

The four E

Canon’s India Village Adoption Project focuses on the four S’s of its CSR policy – ​​Education, Eye Care, Empowerment and Environment. Manabu “also forms the basic criteria for sustainable living”.

Focused primarily on education, the program has established a resource center and e-learning facility and helps schools improve their overall infrastructure in adoptive villages.

At the resource centers, teachers conduct door-to-door remedial classes to teach students on tablets developed by Canon India.

It also emphasizes improving student enrollment and retention numbers. Over the past five years, Canon India has contributed to the enrollment of a total of 1,235 children in schools in its adopted villages.

For eye care, Canon has established vision centers in the villages that have received them, where the community can have their eyes checked by specialists.

It conducts regular free eye check-up camps for students and the public and identifies cataract and other patients and sends them to nearby government hospitals for further treatment. Presented to date Over 5,342 patients underwent a free eye exam.

To ensure proper lighting after sunset, the initiative has installed solar panels in village schools to provide continuous power supply and solar street lights. In the last five years, 38 solar street lights and 10 kw were installed in the village.

The ambitious projects – groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting projects – will help improve the groundwater on the school campus. Other sustainable projects include sanitation, tree planting drives and kitchen gardens in village households.

He planted 685 trees around the village, established 71 kitchen gardens.

Moreover, to empower the community, Canon has established vocational training centers to provide job opportunities to the youth.

“Beyond raising a village, we have tied up with SOS Children’s Villages of India to support the education and overall development of children in these villages,” shares Manabu.

This initiative is a joint effort of Canon India and its employees, which will match the amount donated by their employees towards the adoption of children. “By 2021, 218 workers will have adopted 252 children from SOS Indian villages,” he said.

“Through our community-based CSR initiatives, we have touched more than 156,849 lives since 2015 with the active participation of more than 16,024 volunteers,” Manabu said.

Empowering women

Amidst the pandemic, Canon has launched a special initiative to empower women to become financially independent and support their families.

Earlier this year, the company will organize mask-making workshops for the women of Anadodi village near Bengaluru. The first group consisted of 15 women and they made 5,000 masks in three months.

Based on the vision of creating female entrepreneurs, Canon buys these masks and distributes them to students and teachers in the adopted villages.

“We are going from strength to strength with our initiative to empower women and young girls to become self-aware and confident and self-sustainable,” says Manabu.

To this end, Kanon is planning an interactive session with two former students of the vocational center – who now work in a post office and a hospital – for the women of Maheshwari village.

It aims to highlight the importance of women’s empowerment and create a much-needed conversation to break down the biases and barriers that women face to self-reliance. The session includes a section on menstrual health that focuses on creating awareness among women and young girls.

“In line with the current economic requirements, we are doing vocational training activities specially designed for women. In addition to creating awareness on social issues, we provide various technical skills, including tailoring and beauty courses, we encourage them to follow the path of entrepreneurship and become financially independent,” he explains.

There are at least 10 challenges that a person faces when bringing about grassroots changes in society. For Canon, it was the realization that it would take time to make a measurable impact.

At first, when Kannon adopted the villages, he intended to implement certain activities that the children and the community would be accustomed to. However, it took time to realize the benefits of the activities. By doing regular awareness activities and making them active participants in the development projects.

“We understand that any development is not a one-year task. It takes time to make a difference,” says Manabu, adding that the company is looking forward to contributing to global change and development, regardless of the obstacles it faces now.
