Kerala to study the impact of Adani port construction on the coast | Whuff News

Kerala will set up a committee to look into whether there has been coastal erosion during the construction of a port being built by the Adani group, according to a government order seen by Reuters.

Construction of the port, which began in 2015 in the town of Vizhinjam, has drawn opposition from locals and fishermen, who say it is causing coastal erosion.

An expert committee will examine whether there is any coastal erosion and talk to local representatives before issuing a final report, the government order said.

A spokesperson for the Adani group did not respond to a request for comment.

Local media in August reported that the company had approached a local court asking for police protection for workers working in construction, saying their lives were in danger from protesters.

The Vizhinjam port is the only transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent, and offers large-scale automation, according to a description on Adani’s port logistics website.
