Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Open 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Work with the ranching staff at the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve to help protect important wildlife habitats. Help with road maintenance, fence construction, sign installation and more. No experience is necessary. Age 15 and up. Sign in

Avatar competition

The mission of the XPRIZE Foundation is to empower and empower humanity to achieve important things to accelerate a hopeful future. One of the foundation’s competitions is the ANA Avatar XPRIZE, a four-year global competition focused on the development of an avatar system that will convey a person’s emotions, actions and participation in a remote locations in real time, leading to a more connected world. The two-day event, open to the public free of charge, will be held from 10 am-6 pm on November 4th and November 5th at the Long Beach Convention Center, 300 E. Sports games

The South Bay Athletic Club meets at noon on Fridays at HT Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. A different speaker every week. The luncheon is open to the public. Lunch is $30.

Close Acceptance for “Texture”

Join the Palos Verdes Library District to celebrate “Texture,” the art exhibit featuring the Redondo Beach Art Group. Live music and soft drinks are provided. 4-7 pm at Malaga Cove Library, 2400 Vía Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates.

Discussion in the library

The Palos Verdes Library District is holding a series of community discussions. Share your thoughts on the library in an informal meeting. The first meeting was held on October 28. The second meeting is at 10 am on November 5th at Malaga Cove Library and the third and final meeting is at 6 pm on November 10th at Miraleste Library. To register to participate, go to

George F Canyon Guided Nature Preserve Walk

10:30 a.m. with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You will be guided by an experienced person to study a unique species of animals in their habitat of the valley. Enjoy amazing views of the LA Basin. Meet at the back of the George F Canyon Nature Center. Park at the Preserve, located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. No RSVP required. Rain has been cancelled.

Author’s discussion

Local writer, and author Deborah Paul will be the guest speaker at the Southwest Manuscripters/Surfwriters conference. Paul will discuss his work with the Flying Tigers of aviation, flying sailors from Southeast Asia, and pilgrims in the Muslim hadijs in Mecca, and how these experiences inspired him to write about his travels are unusual. He will also talk about self-publishing five children’s books. 2pm at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Library, 701 Silver Spur Road.

Abalone Cove Hike

Enjoy a guided tour of Abalone Cove at 2 pm Guided by Los Serenos docents, you will hike past the unique flora and fauna and explore the waters. Coastal sediments. The difficulty of the trek is moderate to strenuous. The trail to and from the pools is about a mile and includes an elevation change of about 120-feet. It is a children’s walk but the paths and rocky beaches are not suitable for babies. No dogs are allowed on the beach. The hike is free, and rain has canceled the hike. Nature Walk Guide

Enjoy a guided nature walk at 9am at Alta Vicente Reserve and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Explore cactus wren and gnatcatcher restoration sites. South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society

The group will meet at 1pm at the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula. Free admission for SCCSS members and their guests. Kelly Griffin will give a presentation, “Now and then – A note on the Yemeni island of Socotra.” Griffin, a succulent hybridizer, propagator and avid botanist, will discuss the flora and fauna he has observed on two trips to Socotra. Living room music

The South Bay’s Chamber Orchestra continues with Boris Allakhverdyan, principal clarinet with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on November 13; Claire Huangci, piano, on Jan 15. Marcia Dickstein on guitar and Philip Vaiman on violin on March 5 and a concert titled, “Beethoven to Broadway,” on April 15. All concerts are at 7 p.m. at the Norris Theatre, 27570 Norris Center. “The Nutcracker”

Kick off your holiday season with “The Nutcracker,” presented by Peninsula School of Performing Arts. Performances will be held at the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Norris Theater on November 18 at 7 pm, November 19 at 2 pm and 7 pm. and Nov. 20 pm and 4 pm Tickets are $40 for adults and $30 for children 17 and under. Volunteer day out at the Alta Vicente Reserve

Help the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy restore habitat on a 22-acre restoration site to create a home for cactus wrens and rare gnatcatchers. The location offers beautiful views of Catalina Island. 9 in the afternoon. Sign in

Guided Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve

10:30 a.m. with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Naturalists will guide you on a path to find a unique species in their sage habitat with amazing views of the ocean Meet in front of the Nature Center and come in to explore after the walk. Park in the lot at the dead end of 1600 Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. No reservations are required. Reserve parking is available in a gravel lot at 1600 West Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.
