SALINAS VALLEY – Key for a Cure Foundation sponsored two events in October, one each in Salinas and King City, which raised a combined amount of more than $67,000 to support childhood cancer research.
The Foundation’s second annual golf tournament to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was held on October 3 at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas.
Proceeds from the tournament, on-campus fundraising contests, post-game receptions and live auctions generated $46,365 in revenue, according to Liz Grijalva, Key for a Cure Foundation president.
“We appreciate the support of our community, every penny and person makes a big difference,” Grijalva said. “The Foundation is very grateful for all those who continue to show great love to the children of St. Jude.”
The sixth annual “Chasing Dreams, Finding Cures” fundraiser, also sponsored by Key for a Cure, was held the same week at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.
The 7-9 October added another $21,305 in net income for the cause. There were over 300 games over the weekend, and Kristi Youngblood claimed the winner.
Organizers also ran a marathon this year for St. Jude and Jacob’s Heart, which has 467 new and used books donated by donors.

We also want to thank all the competitors,” said Janel Flook, owner and owner of Running F Quarter Horses in Bitterwater, one of the race’s major sponsors along with Spurr Co. in Paso Robles. “This year has been wonderful and everyone is great to work with. Thank you for coming together to help us help St. Jude!”
“Chasing Dreams” has earned a total of $155,379 in the last six years. The seventh barrel race in the new year has been scheduled for the weekend of November 4-5, 2023, at the stadium.
Key for a Cure Foundation, founded in 2015, raises money to support innovative childhood cancer research that leads to better treatments for children with cancer .
Run by volunteers, the Foundation is currently working to raise funds for T-cell immunotherapy research being conducted at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. More than $880,000 has been raised for this new research.
