Sarah VanVooren will serve as SIU’s director of events and conferences

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Sarah VanVooren, a former alumna of Southern Illinois University Carbondale who has served the university in a number of roles, most recently assistant director of events and planning services, will be the new director of events. events and conferences, beginning Nov .1.

“I am excited about the opportunity to combine the University’s content and programs with the areas of Conferences and Organizational Services in an effort to improve and put the special programs and special projects of the university under one umbrella,” VanVooren said. “This final merger will offer greater opportunities and structures for collaboration through events on and off campus. I look forward to being in a role where we can showcase all of the great programs, facilities and services SIU has to offer on campus, the region and beyond.

VanVooren will coordinate a variety of events that attract hundreds of thousands of people each year while overseeing a staff of more than a dozen full-time employees and students. Among those activities are the planning and implementation of the opening ceremony, various organizations / donations, SIU days in Springfield and Du Quoin state fair, and more. In addition, the plans require VanVooren to reorganize the current conference and continuing education planning office, which he oversees, in a central event office.

Bring great skill to the role

He brings more than 14 years of professional experience to his new role, having worked in his current position since 2019 and previously served as associate director of conference and planning services and operations. and organized for the Student Center since 2011. During that time, he worked on many big events, including the total eclipse celebration 2017, initiation and many other activities. He also oversees the Conference and Planning Services, which annually handles more than 150 programs and camps with approximately 5,000 other bookings, and manages many other programs and activities of the Students. as well as over 600 continuing education and training staff. development course.

Previously, VanVooren was the associate director of athletics activities at Purdue University.

He earned a master’s degree in college education and a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in political science at SIU. He is also active in the Rotary Club of Carbondale Breakfast and other community service projects.
